Please read carefully!
Entry and Prizes:
1. The entry fee is $75 per car. Entries will be accepted on a first come, first entered basis. Car numbers will be confirmed by pre-registration only, on a first come, first entered basis as well. Duplication of numbers will not be permitted.
2. There will be four (4) heats, limited to a maximum of 12 entries each. Total entries for the Demolition Derby will be limited to 48. It is highly recommended that you get your entry forms into the Fair Office as soon as possible – don’t wait until July.
3. This is a Jackpot Demolition Derby with $2,000 ADDED MONEY . The top three (3) placings will be paid. In addition, a trophy will be awarded to the Grand Champion. The top five (5) will be eligible to compete in the State Demolition Derby in Riverton.
4. There will be cash prizes for the top three (3) “Best Painted Cars”. The prizes are donated by the Teton County Fair Board. Judging will take place in the pit area, and the winner will be allowed to parade the car at the beginning of the Derby.
5. A $500 cash prize will also be awarded to the driver of any car that is rolled over.
Automobile Preparation:
1. Any year, model or make of passenger car or station wagon may be used, except Chrysler Imperials. NO PICK-UPS OR 4X4’S!!!
2. Cars must be stock height. Lift kits are not allowed. Height of bumper may not exceed 24" from ground to bottom edge of bumper.
3. All glass, plastic and pot metal must be removed. Nothing may remain in the bottom of the doors and trunk. All outside hardware must be removed (door handles, mirrors, chrome, molding, screws, fiberglass, etc.). All but the first inner panel above the frame hump must be removed from station wagons. However, all seams must be visible. Only four 1/2" bolts using two 2" washer (washers not to exceed 2") through the sheet metal only may fasten this panel. MUST be removed prior to entrance onto the Teton County Fairgrounds.
4. No added weight to the car except the weld. No packing the frames, trunks, passenger doors or under floor decking.
5. Front seats must be securely mounted to the floor and must have seat belts. All cars must have inner padding on driver's door.
6. All flammable materials inside the car must be removed, except necessary safety padding and seat.
7. No antifreeze or other cooling addivitives - only water may be used.
8. Minimal pre-bending of the body and frame only.
Fuel Pumps:
No pressure fuel systems or electric fuel pumps will be permitted, unless equipped with a manual shut-off AND okayed by the Derby Chairman. All shut-offs must be clearly marked.
Tires:
Tires must be auto or truck tires. You may tube, screw, glue, tire inside of tire, flappers, and use recaps. Only air must be used to inflate your tires. Removal of all wheel weights is mandatory.
Brakes:
All cars must exhibit the ability to stop before entering the arena. If a car loses its braking ability, it will be subject to a disqualification.
Engines and Rear Ends:
1. Engine must be in original position.
2. Holes left in the firewall more than 8" x 8" from removing the dash and heater must be covered to prevent fire hazards.
3. No holes will be allowed in the floor of the car except to accommodate the transmission shifter, fuel and transmission lines and wiring. Shifters may be tack welded or bolted. Patching holes is for safety, not reinforcement. If patching rust holes, you may use sheet metal not to exceed 2" past rusted area.
4. Motor mounts may be welded. Transmissions and motors may be chained. If making motor mounts to raise shift or use different motors in different cars, mounts cannot exceed original footprint of motor mount (approximately 5" x 5"). No reinforcing of engine frame cradle.
5. Spider gear in rear end may be welded.
Securing:
1. Only 3/8" rolled filler or 3/4" x 3/16" flat strap may be used for seam welding.
2. Chain must be no larger than 3/8" when chaining.
3. Only zip screws or bolts not bigger than 1/4" may be used around any hood cut out openings. Must be spaced 12" apart.
4. Bolting must be used to secure your hood and trunk. The tailgate of a station wagon will be treated as a trunk. No. 9 wire may only be used in place of chain wher chaining is allowed.
Door and Windows:
1. Doors may be fully welded. All exterior door seams may be welded or you may chain, at least twice per seam. If chaining or wiring, none may go through or around the frame.
2. A protective bar may be placed on the driver's exterior door. It cannot extend more than 6" past the driver's door seam on either side.
3. One bar running from the roof down to the cowl or front dashboard bar is mandatory, centered on the front window. No more than two bars may be used. No read window bars allowed.
4. Door seams only may be pinched and welded where the windows come up. No added metal may be used.
5. You may use a screen or netting over driver's side front window and driver's door only. Must be chicken wire type material or netting.
Interior Bars:
1. All interior bars may not exceed a 4" outside diameter or have greater than a 6" x 6" x 1/2" end plate. All bars must be welded in place - no bolting allowed.
2. A bar behind the seat is mandatory. It must be located no more than 6" from the final resting position of your seat. Another bar from B post bracket to dash firewall is optional. Another bar may be located in place of the dash (A post to A post).
3. One upright post or roll loop may be used. It must be attached only to the seat bar and roof and must be located behind the driver's seat. No uprights may be attached from the cross pipes to the floor or frame.
4. All bars in the proximity of the head should be padded.
Welding:
1. The ONLY WELDING ALLOWED on the BODY SHEET METAL will be the door perimeters, trunk perimeter, fender cut-outs (see cut-out rules) and driver-side door reinforcement. Bumper shock packs and brackets may be welded to the frame, bumper, and the shock itself may be welded. Any welding ANYWHERE ELSE will lead to IMMEDIATE DISQUALIFICATION!
2. No painting or undercoating may be used underneath the car.
Bolting:
1. Hood Attachment(see Hood rule #3) Option 2 - No more than six bolts using 2" x 2" angle iron nor longer than 6" per attachment. Option 3- 6 - 3/4" bolts may be used to secure hood through hood down through inside fender well. 2 - 3/4" all thread may be used to go through front body mounts and radiator supports and through the hood with all the options.
2. As well as welding trunk lid, you may use two bolts not to exceed 3/4" and two washers not to exceed 3" in diameter through trunk lid and floor. Bolts and washers may not go through, around or touch the frame or uni-body.
3. Bolts may not exceed 3/4" in diameter or 8" in length. (Bolts going through trunk lid and floor and radiator supports are the only exceptions).
Chains:
1. 3/8" chain is allowed to secure front and rear bumpers to the frame. Only two chains may be used. It may not loop through the hood or trunk. Excessive chaining (more than two wraps) may not be allowed.
Bumpers:
1. Stock O.E.M. bumpers of passenger cars must be used.
2. Bumpers may be cut so they do not smash into the tires during the event. Chrome may be spot welded to the inner bumper box to keep it from separating.
3. Bumpers may be flipped.
4. Bumpers may be welded to the brackets.
5. Bumper brackets may be welded to the frame. If swapping bumper and brackets, original bracket and hardware must be removed or stay in stock position with no welding or modification of original hardware other than trimming to accommodate new bracket and bumper. New bracket must remain vertical and attached to bumper. Only one bracket may be used to hold bumper on.
6. Compression bumpers may be drained, slid back into the shock and welded fully.
7. No material may be added, other than the weld.
8. No chrome may be welded to the body on '73 or newer bumpers. '72 and older cars may weld original bumpers to the body using the third rule. This will apply to '73 cars with non-compression rear bumpers.
9. No welding of any kind other than straps and bumper brackets is allowed on the bumper.
Frame and Fender:
1. There is no welding of or to the frame allowed other than the bumper brackets (see Bumpers).
2. If you cut the frame for pre-bending purposes, you may not weld the cut back together.
3. No welding to the frame other than the bumper brackets and motor mounts.
4. All body mounts (rubber biscuit and cone) and pucks must be stock, uncut and in place. You may not remove bolts and place washers on both sides.
5. No buffing, grinding, or packing of frames.
6. Humps may be chained with one wrap, but may not be welded to frame.
7. No Chrysler sub-frame chaining other than the rear humps and on the front frame in front of the motor using only two wraps around the frame.
8. No frame swaps allowed. Original frames must be used.
9. No reinforcing of fenders.
10. No sand will be permitted in fenders. They will be drilled. If sand is found, vehicle will be immediately disqualified. No exceptions.
Radiators:
1. Radiators must be automobile or truck radiators. NO HOMEMADE RADIATORS.
2. Radiators must stay in the stock position. (No added water capacity).
3. Only water may be used. No antifreeze or added coolants of any kind may be used.
4. Upper radiator supports may be bolted with two bolts with 3" washers. This may be done whether you use either of the hood bolting rules (see rule #1 of Hoods).
5. Lower radiator support body mount bushings may be removed and replaced with a maximum 3/4" bolt diameter. Bolt may go up through the upper core support body mount or when the body mount is located in front of the core support may weld to the top of the frame a nut to screw the bolt into or burn a hole through the frame behind the core support no more than 1/2" behind the core support in either case. Nothing other than the nut to the frame may be welded.
Transmission Coolers:
1. Transmission coolers will be allowed.
2. Proper hydraulic, metal, or steel braided line may be used.
3. Condenser must be enclosed or covered.
4. Overall safety will be determined by the officials at the time of inspection.
Gas Tanks:
1. Original gas tanks must be removed from the car. If original tank is needed to operate with the engine fuel system (electrical fuel pumps), it must be mounted in the same location as any fuel tank.
2. You must have your gas tank securely mounted inside the car, behind the driver's seat. We recommend covering gas tank (no plumbers tape or bungee cords).
3. A maximum size of 6.5 gallons can be used.
4. A marine type tank or fuel cell must be used.
5. Overall safety will be determined by the officials at the time of inspection.
6. Gas cans must have hose secured tightly and safely into the can. No silicone or duct tape.
7. All electrical fuel systems will be equipped with a shut-off switch in easy reach of the driver. All shut-offs must be clearly marked.
Battery:
1. Only an automotive type 12-volt battery may be used.
2. Only one battery may be in the car.
3. Battery must be securely mounted inside the car in front of the seat and covered.
4. Box may not roll over or be bolted through the frame. Use of plumbers tape or bungee cords is not allowed.
Air Cleaners:
1. You must have an air cleaner over the carburetor at all times during the event.
2. No starting fluid will be allowed.
3. Mandatory - two 8" x 8" holes on each side of carburetor for fire safety.
Cut Outs:
1. Cut outs over the wheel wells are legal.
2. Cut outs may be folded over no more than three times. These may be bolted. No welding of folds allowed.
3. If cut outs are folded, you may be asked to cut an inspection hole in them.
4. Only three 3/8" bolts with 1" fender washers or three 6" welds directly over the fender may be used.
5. You must have two holes cut in the trunk lid for inspection - minimum of 8" in diameter.
6. If inspections holes and fire holes are determined to be too small, you will be asked to cut them larger.
7. Mandatory - two 8" x 8" holes on each side of carburetor for fire safety.
Trailer Hitches:
Trailer hitches and framework must be removed.
Suspension:
1. Suspension must be original factory for that make and model of car. No pulling shocks and putting pipes in their place.
2. No other means other than the tires and spring spacers may be used to raise the car's suspension.
3. No adding reinforcements to the suspension.
4. No putting leaf springs on top of the axle.
5. You may weld coil springs to the frame so they do not fall out. No filler may be used.
6. You may not clamp the shocks - no solid suspension.
7. No air shocks may be used.
8. Suspension must work.
9. No coil spring to leaf spring conversions allowed.
Hoods:
1. No welding of hoods closed. Hoods must be able to open.
2. Cars must have engine compartment covered. You may have up to 30" x 30" opening with the front of the engine covered (belts, hoses, and pulleys). Hood openings may be folded no more than three times, secured with no more than three 1/4" bolts per side (no welding of folds).
3. Option 1- Hood may be secured with chains. Option 2 - No more than six bolts using 2" x 2" angle iron no longer than 6" per attachment. Option 3 - Six 3/4" x no longer than 8" bolts may be used to secure hood through hood down through inside fender well. Two 3/4" all thread may be used to go through body front mounts and radiator supports and through the hood with all options.
Safety Belts:
Safety belts are compulsory Cars must contain D.O.T. approved seat belt. Seat belts shall be attached securely to the floor. NOTE: Seat belt grab or slack-adjusting ratchet MUST be removed or secured/blocked to prevent overtensioning of belt upon rear impact. ALL AIRBAGS MUST be disconnected or removed.
Drivers,Pit Crew and Pit Crew Area:
1. ABSOLUTELY NO ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES will be allowed in the pit area. As well, any driver OR pit crew member found with alcohol in his/her possession while on the Teton County Fairgrounds, at any time that day, will IMMEDIATELY DISQUALIFY the DERBY CAR and DRIVER from the event.
2. All Derby cars must be in the pit area NO LATER than 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 27. NO late entries will be allowed. Cars may not come onto the Teton County Fairgrounds any earlier than 11:00 a.m. The pit area will be on Snow King Avenue (behind the covered grandstands). Please enter the fairgrounds through the west entrance.
3. All drivers and mechanics (pit crew) MUST be 18 years of age or older, and must sign a liability release BEFORE entering the pit area.
4. Drivers will be given a wristband, identifying them as a driver. Wristbands will be handed out in the pit area after 4:00 p.m.
5. Each entry will be allowed to have no more than two (2) “pit crew passes” (wristbands) for their pit crew. Wristbands will be handed out in the pit area. All others will be required to purchase an admission ticket. For those of you bringing spectators with you, we suggest you purchase your Derby tickets well in advance. As you know, seating is limited and if you wait to purchase tickets the day of the event, it may already be sold out. Being associated with a Derby car does not guarantee availability of tickets for the Derby.
6. Only the Derby car, one support car and one trailer will be allowed in the pit area. A parking pass for both cars may be picked up at the Fair Office, or will be mailed to you, upon acceptance of your entry form. All other vehicles must park in the regular parking or off-grounds. There is not an unloading ramp available. Be sure you make necessary arrangements to unload and reload your own car.
7. Derby cars must be removed from the Teton County Fairgrounds by 12:00 midnight the night of the Derby event, Sunday, July 27, 2008. If the vehicle is not removed, the Fair Board will dispose of the vehicle and will not be held liable for any liability or damages relating to said vehicle. Eiden Construction will pick up ALL cars left on the grounds on Monday, July 28, 2008.
Competition Regulations:
1. ALL drivers must attend the “Drivers Meeting” to be held before the start of the first heat.
2. Drivers must wear a helmet and goggles or a face shield to protect eyes from flying debris kicked up by spinning wheels.
3. No passengers will be allowed to ride in the car at any time during the Demo Derby competition.
4. NO car that is unsafe, such as spilled gasoline inside the car, shall be allowed into the arena. Any DOOR that opens during an event shall result in IMMEDIATE DISQUALIFICATION of that driver.
5. Someone must remain with the car in the pit area until it is passed off, forms are signed and a red flag has been given to them. Once car has been inspected and received the red flag, it will be lined up for it’s designated heat.
6. Unsportsmanlike conduct may be grounds for DISQUALIFCATION for the present and FUTURE years.
7. NO INTENTIONAL HITTING OF THE DRIVER’S SIDE DOOR WILL BE ALLOWED! You will be DISQUALIFIED by officials.
8. Drivers MUST remain alert to signals by the Field Judges. A black flag is sign of DISQUALIFICATION or OUT OF ACTION. A red flag is an EMERGENCY STOP sign and ALL drivers MUST stop until signaled to continue.
9. NO intentional hitting of cars with the “Action” flag down will be permitted.
10. Cars stalled more than two minutes will be declared “Out of Action”.
11. Sandbagging (non-active drivers) will lead to DISQUALIFICATION.
12. All cars must have numbers at least 10" high, placed on each side of the car, on top and on the deck lid. Sponsors may be painted on the car. No risque' or obscene sayings will be allowed.
13. Every car must be equipped with a fire extinguisher.
14. Drivers will not be allowed to leave their cars UNLESS the car is turned over, on fire, or the driver is instructed to do so by Derby Officials.
15. There will be a 20-minute repair break between the last regular heat and the “Loser’s Heat” AND between the “Loser’s Heat” and the Final Heat (Main Event).
16. All qualifying cars from the first heats will be “impounded” in the Bull Pen until the 20-minute repair break immediately prior to the Final Heat (Main Event). There will be no working on those cars prior to that time.
17. Absolutely NO switching cars for Final Heat. You MUST compete with the same car that you qualified in.
18. Any protests or complaints will be taken to the Field Judges. All protests must be made IMMEDIATELY following the heat about which you are protesting.
19. The Teton County Fair Board reserves the right to make any necessary changes in rules, and will give as much advance notice as possible if that happens.
